About us

Inspiration and background

Supporting Independence Outreach Services was created to provide young people with the necessary skills to thrive and achieve complete independence. We recognised the importance of quality support for young people whilst providing safe comfortable accommodation to provide security throughout the journey to independence.

Supporting Independence was created by a team of professionals from diverse backgrounds, social work, youth work, and psychology to create an experienced team well equipped to provide the much-needed support services required by young people transitioning to independence.

Ethos, core aims and function

Our primary focus is on providing support for young people and creating an empathetic, nurturing, and supportive environment for them. It is important to note that "caring" is not the same as delivering care.

The service we provide in supported accommodation is referred to as "support", as it plays a vital role in the children's social care system. Our supported accommodation service is part of a continuum of care and support for looked-after children, those who are not looked after and care leavers as they transition into independent adulthood.

This service is available for young people aged 16 to 18. However, we recognise that some individuals may continue to need support until the age of 25, and we extend our services to accommodate these needs as well.

Ethos, core aims and function

Our business observes the supported accommodation legislation 2023

We observe the Key Principles for young people when providing accommodation and support:

  • I feel safe and secure where I live and in my wider environment
  • My voice is respected, heard, and advocated for, so I can influence the support I receive
  • I have confidence that the adults who support me, understand me, are skilled and work effectively together to best meet my needs
  • Have my own space that I feel proud of and live in comfortable, well-maintained, and stable accommodation
  • Receive high-quality, tailored support that supports my health and wellbeing
  • Have strong, trusting, and meaningful relationships within my support system and can rely on the adults around me
  • Feel supported to learn and apply skills for independent adult living
  • Feel positive about my future and opportunities because of the support I receive

To drive these principles our accommodation and services function to:

  • Provide safe places where young people are protected from harm and where their individual needs are met
  • Offer stability and consistency
  • Enable continuous access to local services including education and healthcare
  • Facilitate the development of strong relationships within the local community
  • Promote positive self-esteem and protect against stigma
  • Supporting young people to access opportunities
  • Support our young people by working towards an independence program aligned with their specific support plan and their aspirations
